FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

Why Local?
There is nothing fresher than food grown in your own backyard.  Fresher food is tastier, has more nutrition, and supports a local economy.  This means increased food security and a source of pride and knowledge of what really does grow in your area.  And, of course, you will know exactly where your food has been.

Food grown locally is also healthier for the environment.  If it doesn’t have to be trucked anywhere, you will be making another excellent choice to reduce global warming emissions. Also, the seeds we use are from Renee's Garden, a local seed seller whose seeds are adapted to our local environment!

In addition, much of our work will be done on bicycle in the Terra Nova tradition.  You can breathe better that way, while we get good exercise.

How much space will I need?
The amount of space needed depends on the number of family members, what vegetables you want, hours of sunlight etc.   Basically for a family of 3-4: 15' x 20' to 20' x 20' area is required.  A 10 X 10 (100 square feet) area can usually feed 1 to 2 people.

How much does it cost?
This depends on what you want done.  See our section on Plan Options to determine the level of farm/garden service you are wanting.

If you want a basic Backyard Bounty, we have found that the cost for growing your vegetables will actually be less than you pay in the market.

What if I want to do it myself but need help?
Your Backyard Bounty offers a consulting program that runs from February thru November. We come out for about 2 hours a month to your home and will give you hands-on instruction about soils, pests, diseases, garden planning, companion planting, succession planting, trellising, weeds, transplanting, seed saving, cover cropping, and  irrigation. There will be written materials as well.  By the time we are done you will be growing your choice crops successfully.

Can I choose which vegetables or herbs you will grow?  Veggie Basket
Absolutely.  We provide a vegetable list that you can download off this website and select what you want that fits with your household’s dining preferences.

How often will you be coming to my home?
Your Backyard Bounty farming service will come to your home once a week to check on the status of your farm and do all the maintenance and harvesting needed at that time.

Why Organic?
We have a commitment to using only organic soil amendments, seed potting mix and non-toxic weed and pest control. Your health, the health of the ground water, and the health of those who play or visit your yard are important to us.

How do I get started?
You can call or e-mail and schedule a home visit.  We can then discuss what level of service you would like and what vegetables you prefer grown and we can begin. Starting a farm can happen anytime but early in Spring or Early Fall are the best times.
